1988 - In the news 25 years ago: Cruising - the favorite pastime of many youngsters - had developed into a nuisance for area businesses. Despite a city ordinance designed to prevent the aimless sport, drivers continued circling around area parking lots and preventing customers from being able to enter businesses. Cruising had gained more popularity with each passing summer, causing headaches for area merchants, customers and police patrolmen. The summer of \'88 wasn\'t any different and some store managers said they were beginning to worry about their customers\' and employees\' safety. Three years before the Athens City Council had passed an ordinance prohibiting the activity in an attempt to eliminate cruising. Law enforcement officers were allowed to issue fines to anyone they witnessed circling around the parking lot at least three times.
