1988 - In the news 25 years ago: Major contributors to the McMinn County Economic Development Authority were calling for changes in the agency\'s charter in order for it to expand its realm of responsibilities. \"I thought it would be good if we (the funding agencies) could just sit down and discuss where we\'re going,\" said Athens Mayor and EDA Chairman Bill Brakebill during a joint meeting of funding agencies. EDA was jointly funded by the City of Athens, Athens Utilities Board, McMinn County, the City of Etowah and Etowah Utilities Board, as well as private contributors. A three-year commitment by the funding agencies was set to expire. Brakebill said the purpose of the agency was to work together for one purpose and one goal - to create jobs. He suggested possibly expanding the funding agreement to five years, but AUB General Manager George Usry said the funders should \"ward off a specific time frame.\"
